In 1990, the average cost of tuition for a year at a public university was $1,780. In 2020, it was over $10,000–far outpacing inflation. From 1989 (when I first started college) to 2016, college costs increased almost 8 times faster than wages. As we toured different schools, some told families to plan to spend $80,000 per year. That’s why so many Americans are straddled with student loan debt and why many others aren’t able to attend college at all.
